Provisions for Dangerous Goods Carried by Passengers or Crew

Dangerous  goods  must  not  be  carried  in  or  as  passengers  or  crew,  checked  or  carry-on  baggage,  except  as otherwise  provided  below.  Dangerous  goods  permitted  in  carry-on  baggage  are  also  permitted  “on  one's person”,  except  where otherwise specified.

 

Alcoholic beverages

 when in retail packagings, containing more than 24% but not more than 70% alcohol by volume, in receptacles not exceeding 5 L, with a total net quantity per person of 5 L.

Ammunition (cartridges for weapons), securely packaged

Avalanche rescue backpack

one (1) per person, containing a cartridge of compressed gas in Div. 2.2. May also be equipped with a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism containing no more than 200 mg net of Div. 1.4S. The backpack must be packed in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally activated. The airbags within the backpacks must be fitted with pressure relief valves.

BAGGAGE EQUIPPED WITH A LITHIUM BATTERY(IES) (SMART BAGS)

Baggage equipped with a lithium battery are allowed in checked baggage and in the cabin provided it meets carry-on baggage size and weight restrictions.

  • Non removable batteries: batteries must contain no more than 0,3 g for lithium metal batteries, or for lithium ion batteries, a Watt-hour rating of 2.7 Wh
  • Removable batteries : batteries must be removed if baggage is to be checked in. Removed batteries must be carried in the cabin

BATTERIES, SPARE/LOOSE, WITH LITHIUM ION CELLS INCLUDING POWER BANK WITH A RATING OF LESS THAN 100WH OR 2 GRAMS

Spare Lithium ion batteries for portable electronic devices including medical devices such as portable oxygen concentrators must be carried in carry-on baggage only.

  • For lithium metal batteries the lithium metal content must not exceed 2 g 
  • For lithium ion batteries the Watt-hour rating must not exceed 100 Wh. 
  • Articles which have the primary purpose as a power source, e.g. power banks are considered as spare batteries. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. 
  • Each person is limited to a maximum of 20 spare batteries.*

*The operator may approve the carriage of more than 20 batteries.

Spare lithium ion batteries for portable electronic devices with a Watt-hour  rating exceeding 100 Wh but not exceeding 160 Wh for consumer electronic devices and PMED or with a lithium metal content exceeding 2 g but not exceeding 8g for PMED only. Maximum of 2 spare batteries in carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

Note: If your hand baggage is checked in or removed at the gate and placed in the hold, you must remove all spare batteries and power banks and carry them with you in the cabin.

 

Camping stoves and fuel containers that have contained a flammable liquid fuel

with empty fuel tank and/or fuel container (see 2.3.2.5 for details).

Chemical Agent Monitoring Equipment

when carried by staff members of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on official travel (see 2.3.4.4).

Disabling devices

such as mace, pepper spray, etc. containing an irritant or incapacitating substance are forbidden on the person, in checked and carry-on baggage.

DRONES

Drones are considered as portable electronic devices (PED), may be transported in the cabin or in the hold provided that they remain switched off and safely stowed all time.

  • If accepted in checked baggage they must be properly packed and the batteries removed from the drone and carried on board in carry-on baggage.  
  • Any battery that has been removed must be protected against short circuit (by placing in its original retail packaging or by otherwise insulating terminals, e.g. by taping over exposed terminals or placing each battery in a separate bag or protective pouch).
  • The removed batteries are considered as spare batteries, refer to section 'Batteries- spare/loose, powerbanks for additional carriage requirements.

Note: If the battery power is over 160 Wh, the drone and its replacement battery are prohibited in the cabin or in the hold.

 

Dry ice (carbon dioxide, solid)

in quantities not exceeding 2.5 kg per person when used to pack perishables not subject to these Regulations in checked or carry-on baggage, provided the baggage (package) permits the release of carbon dioxide gas. Checked baggage must be marked “dry ice” or “carbon dioxide, solid” and with the net weight of dry ice or an indication that there is 2.5 kg or less dry ice.

e-cigarettes

(e.g. Tasers) containing dangerous goods such as explosives, compressed gases, lithium batteries, etc. are forbidden in carry-on baggage or checked baggage or on the person.

containing fuel, powering portable electronic devices (e.g. cameras, cellular phones, laptop computers and camcorders), see 2.3.5.10 for details.

Not more than one (1) device per passenger and up to two (2) spare small cartridges per person, not more than four (4) cartridges up to 50 mL water capacity for other devices.

Gas cylinders

non-flammable, non-toxic worn for the operation of mechanical limbs. Also, spare cylinders of a similar size if required to ensure an adequate supply for the duration of the journey.

Hair curlers containing hydrocarbon gas

up to one (1) per passenger or crew-member, provided that the safety cover is securely fitted over the heating element. These hair curlers must not be used on board the aircraft at any time. Gas refills for such curlers are not permitted in checked or carry-on baggage

HEAT PRODUCING ARTICLES SUCH AS UNDERWATER TORCHES

Battery-powered equipment capable of generating extreme heat, which would cause a fire if activated, e.g. Underwater high intensity lamps, soldering irons.

  • The heat producing component and the battery are isolated from each other by the removal of the heat of producing component, the battery or another component, e.g. Fuse.
  • Any battery that has been removed* must be protected against short circuit (by placement in the original retail packaging or by otherwise insulating terminals, e.g. By taping over exposed terminals or placing each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch) and must be carried in the cabin.

Note: the removed lithium batteries are considered as spare batteries, refer to section 'Batteries- spare/loose, powerbanks for additional carriage requirements.

MOBILITY AIDS /WHEELCHAIRS WITH NON SPILLABLE WET BATTERIES 1

Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility devices with NON SPILLABLE wet batteries or with batteries which  comply  with Special  Provision  A123 or A199, example of batteries complying with special provision A123 and 199 are alkali-manganese, zinc-carbon, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Battery-powered wheelchairs must be loaded and stowed upright. The height and width of the wheelchair must not exceed the maximum height and width of the cargo hold door, per aircraft type.

MOBILITY AIDS / WHEELCHAIRS WITH SPILLABLE WET BATTERIES 2

Battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility devices with SPILLABLE  batteries or with lithium  batteries.

  • Provided that the wheelchair or mobility aid can be loaded, stowed, secured and unloaded always in an upright position then the battery may remain installed in the wheelchair.
  • The battery terminals must be protected from short circuits, e.g. by being enclosed within a battery container, and the battery must be securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid.

MOBILITY AIDS / WHEELCHAIRS WITH LITHIUM BATTERIES 3

Battery-powered  wheelchairs or other similar mobility devices with LITHIUM ION batteries, if the mobility aid is specifically designed to allow it to be the battery must be removed  by the user and carried in the cabin (see 2.3.2.4(d)  for details)., following the manufacturer’s instructions:

  • the battery must not exceed 300 Wh, or for a device that is fitted with two batteries required for its operation, each battery must not exceed 160 Wh.
  • If the battery is not removed, there is no limit to the Wh rating for the installed battery(ies)
  • A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spares each not exceeding 160 Wh.

Non-radioactive medicinal or toiletry articles

(including aerosols) such as hair sprays, perfumes, colognes and medicines containing alcohol;
The  total  net  quantity  of  non-radioactive  medicinal  or  toiletry  articles  and  non-flammable,  non-toxic aerosols  in  Division  2.2  must  not  exceed  2  kg  or  2  L  and  the  net  quantity  of  each  single  article  must  not exceed 0.5 kg or 0.5 L. Release valves on aerosols must be protected by a cap  or other suitable means to prevent inadvertent release of the contents.

Non-flammable, non-toxic aerosols in Division 2.2

Portable electronic devices (PED) CONTAINING LITHIUM BATTERIES NO MORE THAN 100 WH

You should carry your portable electronic devices (PEDs), such as cameras, laptops and phones) including medical devices (PMED)such as portable oxygen concentrators (POC) containing lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, in carry-on or in checked baggage. Whether in your carry-on or checked baggage – the battery must not exceed a certain watt-hour (Wh), and should be bought from original retailers only and never from untrustworthy sources.

  • For lithium metal batteries the lithium metal content must not exceed 2 g and
  • For lithium ion batteries the Watt-hour rating must not exceed 100 Wh.
  • Devices in checked baggage must be completely switched off and must be protected from damage.
  • Each person is limited to a maximum of 15 PED*.  Baggage equipped  with a lithium battery, other than lithium button cells, (such as smart bag) the battery must be removable. If offered as checked baggage the battery must be removed and carried in the cabin.

*The operator may approve the carriage of more than 15 PED.

For portable medical electronic devices only, lithium metal batteries with a lithium metal content exceeding 2 g but not exceeding 8 g. Devices in checked baggage must be completely switched off and must be protected from damage.
