New Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements

New TSA (US Transportation Security Administration) requirements for the transportation of large containers of powder substances in passengers’ carry-on baggage

Alitalia informs that new TSA (US Transportation Security Administration) requirements for the transportation of large containers of powder substances in passengers’ carry-on baggage, will enter into force on 30 June 2018.

These provisions must be respected by passengers of airlines flying to the United States.

According to the new requirements, any large container of powder substances with a weight of 340g / 12oz or more and with a volume of 350ml or more (approximately the size of a standard soft drink can) are prohibited from being transported in carry-on baggage and they must be placed in the checked baggage.

The new requirements do not include the following types of powders which may be carried in the cabin if certain conditions are met:

  • Baby formula (customer must be traveling at least with an infant or young child)
  • Medical powders (customer must have a written prescription from a doctor)
  • Human remains in cinerary urns (containers must be properly sealed)
  • Duty free powder (containers of powders purchased after security checks which must be placed in a sealed bag supplied by the seller)

If the customer, travelling with a container of powder exceeding those limitations, does not want to place the container in the checked baggage, the customer may not be boarded.

If customers have multiple small containers of powder, each less than limitations, they are permitted to transport the small containers of powder in the cabin.
