USA, CANADA AND MEXICO

USA, CANADA and MEXICO have different rules on the transportation of sports equipment

For these destinations, sports equipment that fits into the baggage allowance is treated as normal registered baggage.

If the weight of the sports equipment is less than 23 kg, it fits into the baggage allowance and does not require an additional charge, whereas for equipment that weighs more than 23 kg, an excess baggage fee will apply.

TANDEM BICYCLES, SURFBOARDS AND WINDSURFING BOARDS

Placing tandem bikes, surfing and windsurfing equipment in the hold is never covered by the baggage allowance on your ticket and is subject to the necessary space being available. Please contact the Customer Center at least 48 hours prior to the departure of your flight. If your trip also involves other carriers, you need to receive prior confirmation of transportation from all carriers.

Please go to the check-in desk at least one hour prior to the time limit given for check-in for your flight.

This table displays the excess baggage fees valid for only surfing, windsurfing and tandem bikes. The fees displayed are for one-way flights.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

All musical instruments the sum of whose dimensions (height, width, length) does not exceed 115 cm and whose length does not exceed 115 cm, and with a maximum weight of 8 kg, can be carried free of charge on board, in a special hard case, instead of hand luggage.

Instruments, such as cellos, which do not exceed the following dimensions: 52x40x135 cm (width, depth, height) and weight of 55 kg, must be carried on board by paying for a seat in the cabin (this service is not available for passengers travelling with a Light Fare). The booking must be made at least 48 hours before the day of departure.

Passengers wishing to carry their own musical instruments on board Alitalia flights must arrive at check-in at least 60 minutes before it closes.

Musical instruments measuring less than 115 cm in length and weighing less than 8-kg are classed as normal hand baggage. Instruments exceeding this size and weight must instead be transported as checked baggage.

If you choose to or need to transport instruments in the hold, you must inform the Customer Center 48 hours before departure*.

WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION

Transportation of weapons from/to the United Kingdom (both in the hold and in the cabin) is temporarily suspended pending the finalization of the renewal process of the authorization for Alitalia by the British Authorities.

Weapons and ammunition are not included in the baggage allowance. They must be registered during check-in, subject to payment of a flat-rate surcharge based on the flight destination. Each passenger is allowed to carry a maximum of 20 kg of weapons and a maximum of 5 kg gross per person of ammunition.

APPLICABLE LAWS

The transportation of weapons and ammunition is governed by specific regulations under Law no. 694 of December 23, 1974. In accordance with article 30 of the public safety consolidation act of June 18, 1931 no. 773, weapons are defined as personal weapons, that is, firearms and any weapon whose natural purpose is to harm people, including cutting or puncturing items (daggers, knives, and similar).

TRANSPORTATION

Weapons and ammunition, whose transportation is governed by law enforcement authorities under applicable law, must be declared when booking your flight. They can only be accepted as checked baggage tagged to the final destination, under the following conditions:

  • Weapons must be unloaded, disassembled, and packaged in an appropriate and separate locked container.
  • Ammunition must:
    • Not exceed 5 kg (11 lb) per passenger
    • Be properly protected against impacts and abrupt movements
    • Be packaged in locked individual metal, wooden or fiberglass containers that are resistant to impacts and fire
    • Be transported for sports purposes

Incendiary or explosive bullets or ammunition may not be transported under any circumstances.

Weapons and ammunition that are shipped at the same time must be in two separate and distinct containers; however, only one FEE will be applied.

Considering the special nature of this sort of baggage, you will receive specific information regarding law enforcement regulations and customs procedures. This will allow you to have all of the right documents ready and avoid any problems with the authorities while you travel.

All passengers wishing to transport weapons on flights to or in transit in Abu Dhabi need to obtain a preventive authorization from the local authorities. It is therefore necessary to download the attached module and send it filled, at least 7 days before the departure date, to the following address docspeciali@alitalia.com.

TRANSIT THROUGH ITALY

If your trip includes a stopover or connecting flight in Italy, weapons will be cleared by customs in the Italian airport both on arrival and upon departure, even if they are traveling to another destination inside the country or are tagged through to a foreign destination.

Upon arrival, the weapons will be escorted by Alitalia, or by a representative of Alitalia, to the airport police, who will then ensure they are delivered to the proper place. For more information, please call Baggage Assistance.

*Excess baggage charges are given in: EUR (from Europe, Eastern Europe and Japan), CAD (from Canada), and USD (from the USA and rest of the world)
